Privacy Policy
SubSplit — Effective February 24, 2026
SubSplit ("we", "our", "the app") is a bill-splitting and expense-tracking application. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
1. Information We Collect
Account Information
- Name, email address, and password (password is hashed and never stored in plain text)
- Profile avatar and preferred currency
Financial Data
- Expenses you create: name, amount, category, date, payer, and split details
- Payment records between you and your friends
- Running balances with each friend
- Trip and household ledger information
Friend Information
- Names, email addresses, and phone numbers of friends you add
- Friend email addresses and phone numbers are encrypted at rest in our database
User Content
- Receipt and bill images you upload for scanning
- Messages you send to the AI assistant (processed in real time, not stored permanently on our servers)
- Comments on shared expenses
Device Information
- Push notification token (to deliver notifications to your device)
- Biometric authentication preference (stored locally on your device only)
2. How We Use Your Information
- Core functionality: To split expenses, track balances, manage friends, and organize ledgers
- Receipt scanning: Receipt and bill images are sent to Anthropic's Claude API for text extraction and parsing. Images are processed in real time and are not retained by Anthropic beyond the API request.
- AI assistant: Conversation messages are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate responses. Messages are not retained beyond the API request.
- Email notifications: We use Resend to send transactional emails when friends split expenses with you, record payments, or settle balances
- Push notifications: To remind you before recurring subscriptions renew and to alert you about expense activity
- Authentication: To verify your identity and secure your account

4. What We Do NOT Collect
- We do not use any third-party analytics or advertising SDKs
- We do not track your location
- We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers
- We do not access your device contacts or photo library beyond what you explicitly select
5. Data Security
- Passwords are hashed using bcrypt before storage
- Email addresses and phone numbers are encrypted at rest in our database
- Authentication tokens (JWT) are stored in your device's secure enclave via Expo SecureStore
- All network communication uses HTTPS
- Biometric data (Face ID / fingerprint) never leaves your device — we only store your preference to use it
6. Data Retention
Your data is retained for as long as you maintain an active account. You can export all your data (expenses, payments, and friends) as a CSV file at any time from the app's settings.
7. Your Rights
- Access: You can view all your data within the app and export it as CSV
- Deletion: Contact us to request full account and data deletion
- Correction: You can update your profile information within the app at any time
8. Children's Privacy
SubSplit is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date.
